Sardinia is called "the island of a hundred colors and a hundred scents." This island has white and golden sand beaches, a clear turquoise sea, pink flamingos, a carpet of colorful wildflowers, olive groves, citrus orchards, and an abundance of colorful fruits.
September and October are perfect times of the year to see the island in all its glory. I spent two weeks in Sardinia: the last week of September and the first week of October. In this article, I will share what to expect from your holiday in Sardinia in autumn.
Why Is It Worth Visiting Sardinia in September and October?
1. In September and October, Sardinia has warm, pleasant weather.
I liked Sardinia in September and October. There was no stifling heat on the island that you can't avoid in August. In September, pleasantly warm weather reigns in Sardinia. But it is rather difficult to predict what the weather will be exactly during your vacation.
Sometimes it is warmer in early September + 28 ° С during the day and + 19 ° С at night, in the middle of the month it gets cooler + 22 ° С during the day and + 16 ° С at night, and then at the end of September, the heat comes back again with + 29 ° С.
Sometimes, on the contrary, mid-September is warmer than at the beginning and end of September. Sometimes the warmest temperature is at the end of September, while the first days can upset you with a + 16 ° C. There are also quite sharp jumps in the weather: it can get colder by 10 degrees in one day.
And yet, on average, the air temperature in September is about + 25 ° C during the day and + 18 ° C at night.
In October, the temperature goes a bit down, but it's still pleasant +23 ° C.
In September and October, it rains in Sardinia, but not much. Three or four cloudy and rainy days will hardly ruin the trip, and if it does rain, it will be warm and short.
2. In autumn, you can enjoy the deserted beaches of Sardinia.
There are significantly fewer tourists in Sardinia in September and October than at the summer season height.
In early September, the beaches begin to empty. You will practically not be bothered by obsessive sellers on the beach selling all kinds of nonsense - cheap sunglasses, jewelry, and towels.
Most of the tourists with school-age children left to start a school year, so on the beach, you will listen to the cries of seagulls and not the wild squeals of children.
The Tyrrhenian and Mediterranean seas wash the island. In early September, the water temperature is about + 24 ° C; by the end of the month, the water cools down to + 22-23 degrees. Basically, you can swim during the whole month of September, although it is more pleasant in the first half of the month. In early October, the water temperature is + 21-22 ° C. I had a great time at the Sardinian beach in autumn, swimming and sunbathing.
3. Autumn fruits ripen in Sardinia
September and October in Sardinia is the season for figs, apples, pears, peaches, melons, nectarines, and grapes. Moreover, all this will be ripe, surprisingly tasty, and ecological.
4. Autumn in Sardinia is the time to try young wine
Winemaking in Sardinia is an integral part of life and economy and has an ancient history. You can visit the wineries and get acquainted with the process of wine production, and of course, taste local wines. In addition to walking through the vineyards, it is worth attending Sardinia's wine events: Open Cellars in the south of Sardinia and new wine festivals in Oristano.
5. September is the time of festivals in Sardinia
Coming to Sardinia in autumn, you have a unique opportunity to participate in various festivals. At the beginning of September, the Autunno in Barbagia opens up a completely different Sardinia.
If you want to discover Sardinia's national costumes, then welcome to the Cortes Apertas festival, which takes place in 28 provinces of Sardinia. During this festival, you can visit various metal and wood processing workshops and taste different local products, wine, cheese, and much more.
